RuID at a glance
Who needs RuID — and who doesn't
RuID applies only to travelers who enter Russia without any visa under a visa-waiver agreement. If you travel with a visa or e-visa, RuID is not for you.
Visa-free tourists
Citizens of 60+ countries with visa-waiver agreements (UAE, Serbia, Brazil, Argentina, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa and others). Registration is voluntary during the pilot but recommended: it speeds up border control and some airlines ask for the QR code at boarding.
Visa-free work & study entrants
From June 30, 2026 (Government Decree No. 468 of 27.04.2026), foreign citizens entering visa-free for employment or education purposes have specific mandatory pre-registration obligations in RuID.
Long-stay visa-free visitors
Anyone planning to use Russian services — SIM card, bank account, Gosuslugi — benefits from a RuID profile. In-country biometric registration within 10 days of entry is required for those services.
Exempt from RuID
- Travelers with any Russian visa (tourist, business, e-visa) — the visa itself is your authorization
- Citizens of Belarus
- Children under 6 years old
- Holders of diplomatic or official passports and members of official delegations
- Holders of Russian temporary or permanent residence permits
Key dates and rule changes
RuID pilot launched
Visa-free travelers asked to submit an electronic pre-arrival application via the RuID app and receive a QR code. The experiment runs until December 31, 2027.
Official clarification for tourists
The Russian Ministry of Digital Development clarified that for visa-free tourists registration remains voluntary during the experiment. If the QR code doesn't arrive due to app glitches, you can still travel.
Decree No. 468 takes effect
New rules apply to foreign citizens entering visa-free for work or study purposes: pre-arrival registration becomes a specific obligation for these categories.
End of the experiment phase
The pilot period concludes. Authorities are expected to decide whether RuID becomes fully mandatory for all visa-free categories.
How to register in RuID: 5 steps
The whole process takes about 15 minutes. Apply at least 72 hours before your trip — earlier is better.
Install the app and create an account
Download RuID from the App Store, Google Play, RuStore or AppGallery, or use the web version on Gosuslugi. Register with your email and confirm it. Interface languages: English, Russian, Armenian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Uzbek.
Enter your passport and personal data
Fill in your profile: full name, date of birth, valid passport details. Double-check every field — data must match your passport exactly, or you may be refused at the border.
Submit your travel details
Select 'Electronic Travel Authorization': country of departure, travel dates, purpose (tourism, business, study, visiting family), regions you plan to visit. Traveling with children aged 6–18? Both parents enter their details; children under 6 are exempt.
Upload biometrics
Take a clear selfie, photograph your passport data page, and record a short voice sample. Status usually updates within minutes but can take up to 5 days — don't leave it to the last moment.
Receive your QR code
Once approved, the app generates a unique QR code valid for 90 days. Save it on your phone and print a backup copy — you'll present it at border control.

RuID is free and published by the Russian government (Gosuslugi). Beware of look-alike paid apps — registration never costs money.
