iVisa è uno sviluppo congiunto di iVisa LLC e TravelLine. L'obiettivo di questo progetto online è aiutare nell'elaborazione degli inviti turistici necessari ai cittadini stranieri per ottenere un visto russo.

A

Apostille

An apostille is a special stamp certifying the authenticity of a signature, seal, and position of the person who signed a document, for use abroad. In the context of Russian visas, an apostille may be required to legalize documents.

B

Business Visa

A Russian business visa is a type of visa for business trips: negotiations, conferences, contracts. It can be single-entry (up to 90 days), double-entry (up to 90 days), or multiple-entry (up to 5 years). A business invitation on official company letterhead is required.

Border Control

Border control is document verification upon entry/exit from Russia. The border officer checks: passport, visa, migration card. An entry stamp with date is placed upon arrival. Important: the stay period is counted from the stamp date. Entry may be denied if visa and passport data don't match.

C

Consulate

A consulate is a diplomatic representation of one country in another, responsible for issuing visas, document legalization, and citizen assistance. Russian consulates are located in most countries worldwide and accept visa applications in person or through visa centers.

Consular Fee

A consular fee is a mandatory payment for processing a visa application. The amount depends on the applicant's nationality and visa type. For EU citizens — €35 (standard) or €70 (express). For US citizens — $160. The fee is paid upon submission and is non-refundable in case of denial.

Confirmation of Reception

Confirmation of reception of a foreign tourist is the second document in the tourist invitation package. Contains details of the hosting organization, tour operator registry number, itinerary, and stay dates. Together with the voucher, it forms the complete set for a tourist visa application.

Consular District

A consular district is the territory of the host country over which a consular office has jurisdiction. Applicants must submit visa documents to the consulate serving their region of residence.

Duration of Stay

Duration of stay is the maximum number of days a foreign citizen can remain in Russia on a given visa. For tourist visa — up to 30 days, single-entry business — up to 90 days, multiple-entry — 90 days in each 180-day period. Overstaying results in fines and entry ban.

Double-Entry Visa

A double-entry visa allows two entries to Russia during its validity period. Available for tourist (up to 30 days) and business (up to 90 days) visas. Convenient for trips with exits to neighboring countries (e.g., Russia → Finland → Russia). Requires the same invitation as a single-entry visa.

E

Electronic Visa (e-Visa)

An electronic visa (e-Visa) is a simplified Russian visa issued online without visiting a consulate. Available to citizens of 55+ countries. Issued for 16 days (stay up to 8 days) for tourism, business, or humanitarian purposes. No invitation letter required. Valid for entry through designated checkpoints.

GUVM MVD (Migration Service)

GUVM MVD (Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs) is the body responsible for migration registration of foreign nationals, issuing private invitations, residence registration, and work permit processing. Previously these functions were performed by the FMS (Federal Migration Service), abolished in 2016.

Hosting Party

A hosting party is a natural or legal person in Russia who invites a foreign citizen and is responsible for their stay. This can be: a hotel, travel agency, employer company, or Russian citizen (relative/friend). The hosting party is obligated to register the guest.

Humanitarian Visa

A Russian humanitarian visa is a type of visa for participation in cultural, scientific, sports, religious events, and charitable activities. Issued based on an invitation from the event organizer. Can be single-entry or multiple-entry (up to 1 year).

Invitation Letter (LOI)

An Invitation Letter (Letter of Invitation, LOI) is a mandatory document for obtaining a Russian visa. It is issued by the hosting party: a hotel (tourist), a company through the MFA (business), or a private individual through the migration office (private). An electronic tourist invitation can be obtained online in 5 minutes.

M

Migration Card

A migration card is a document filled out by a foreign citizen upon entry to Russia. Contains information about the purpose of visit, duration of stay, and hosting party. Issued free of charge at the border. Required for registration at the place of stay and must be surrendered upon departure.

Multiple-Entry Visa

A multiple-entry visa allows unlimited entries to Russia during its validity period (up to 5 years). Available for business visas. 90/180 rule: stay no more than 90 days in each 180-day period. Requires a business invitation on company letterhead.

MAE della Russia (MID)

The MFA of Russia (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) is the government body responsible for foreign policy and consular services. Russian consulates operate under the MFA and process visa applications for foreign nationals.

O

Overstay

Overstay is remaining in Russia longer than the visa-permitted period. Consequences: fine of 2,000–5,000 RUB, deportation, entry ban from 3 to 10 years depending on the duration of violation. For 1–3 day overstays, a fine without a ban may be possible.

P

Private Visa

A Russian private visa is a type of visa for visiting relatives and friends. Issued for up to 90 days. Requires an invitation from a Russian citizen, processed through the local migration office (GUVM MVD). The invitation processing takes 2–4 weeks.

Passport Validity

Passport validity is a requirement for the passport when applying for a Russian visa. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the visa expiration date. There must also be at least 2 blank pages for the visa sticker and stamps. Damaged passports are not accepted.

R

Registration (Migration Registration)

Registration (migration registration) is a mandatory procedure for notifying authorities about a foreign citizen's place of stay in Russia. Must be completed within 7 business days of arrival (for most countries). Processed by the hosting party (hotel, landlord, employer) at the local migration office (GUVM MVD).

S

Student Visa

A Russian student visa is a type of visa for foreign students admitted to Russian universities. Issued for the duration of studies (up to 1 year, renewable). Required documents: university invitation, enrollment confirmation, medical certificates, HIV-negative certificate.

T

Tourist Visa

A Russian tourist visa is a type of visa for short-term stays for tourism purposes (up to 30 days). Required documents include: a tourist voucher (hotel invitation), booking confirmation, passport, photo, application form, and consular fee. It can be single-entry or double-entry.

Transit Visa

A Russian transit visa is a type of visa for passing through Russian territory to a third country. Issued for up to 10 days. Required: tickets to destination country, visa for destination (if required), passport. Not needed for airport transit without leaving the international zone (up to 24 hours).

Tourist Voucher

A tourist voucher is a document confirming the booking of tourist services (accommodation, excursions) in Russia. It is part of the tourist invitation. Contains tourist data, itinerary, stay dates, and details of the hosting travel agency. Issued together with the confirmation of reception.

Telex (Telex Invitation)

A telex is a legacy method of transmitting a business invitation directly to the consulate via a secure communication channel. Currently, business invitations are issued on official company letterhead and sent by email. Processing time: 1-2 business days.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a mandatory document for obtaining a Russian visa. Must cover: the entire stay period, all Russian territory, minimum sum of €30,000 (or equivalent). Policies from Russian and foreign insurance companies are accepted. Must be obtained before visa application submission.

U

Urgent/Express Visa

An urgent/express visa is expedited Russian visa processing in 1–3 business days (instead of standard 4–20 days). Available at most consulates for double the consular fee. For EU citizens: €70 instead of €35. Not all visa types are available for express processing. The invitation must be ready in advance.

V

Visa

A visa is an official document (stamp or sticker in a passport) granting the right to enter, stay in, or transit through a foreign country. Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter Russia, which is issued by a Russian consulate based on an invitation letter.

Visa Center

A visa center is a commercial organization authorized to accept visa documents on behalf of a consulate. Main operators for Russia: VFS Global, VMS. Visa centers charge an additional service fee (€20–35) but offer convenient hours and extra services (photos, copies, courier).

Visa-Free Regime

A visa-free regime is an agreement between countries allowing citizens to enter without a visa for a specified period. Russia has visa-free agreements with 60+ countries (Brazil, Argentina, Israel, South Korea, etc.). Visa-free stay is usually 30–90 days. A visa is still required for longer stays.

Visa Application Form

A visa application form is a standard form for applying for a Russian visa. Filled out online at visa.kdmid.ru (for most consulates). Contains: personal data, passport details, purpose of trip, itinerary, hosting party information. Printed, signed, and submitted with a photo.

Visa Validity

Visa validity is the period during which a visa allows entry to Russia. It differs from the duration of stay: a visa may be valid for 30 days, but the stay is limited to 14 days. Entry must occur before the validity expires. After expiration, the visa is automatically cancelled.

Visa Extension

Visa extension is a procedure to increase the stay period in Russia without leaving the country. Available in exceptional cases: illness, force majeure, contract extension (for work visas). Processed through the local migration office (GUVM MVD). Tourist visas cannot be extended.

Visa Refusal

Visa refusal is a consulate's decision not to issue a visa. Reasons: incomplete documents, suspected immigration intent, past violations, insufficient financial means. The consular fee is non-refundable. Reapplication is possible after addressing the reasons for refusal.

Visa Photo Requirements

Russian visa photo requirements: size 3.5×4.5 cm, color, white background, no glasses or headwear (except religious), face occupies 70–80% of frame, taken within last 6 months. Photo is glued to the application form. Some consulates only accept matte photos.

Visa Support

Visa support is a set of services for preparing documents for a Russian visa. Includes: invitation processing, application form assistance, document consultation, hotel booking, insurance arrangement. Provided by travel agencies and specialized agencies.

Visa on Arrival

Visa on arrival is a visa issued directly at the airport or border. Russia does NOT issue visas on arrival for most categories. Exception: some special economic zones and e-Visa (applied online in advance but doesn't require consulate visit). A visa for Russia must be obtained in advance.

Visa Regime

A visa regime is a set of rules and requirements governing the entry of foreign nationals into a country. Russia has a visa regime with most countries in the world, except CIS states and certain countries with visa-free agreements.

W

Work Visa

A Russian work visa is a type of visa for employment of foreign nationals. Issued for the duration of the work permit (up to 1 year, renewable). Required documents: work permit, invitation from employer through the migration office, medical certificates.

Work Permit

A work permit is a document granting a foreign citizen the right to work in Russia. Processed by the employer through the migration office (GUVM MVD). Valid for up to 1 year, renewable. A simplified procedure exists for Highly Qualified Specialists (HQS).
