Russian Visa Documents Checklist for US Citizens (2026)

Quick answer

U.S. citizens applying for a Russian tourist visa should prepare the passport, printed and signed application, recent photo, tourist voucher and the payment or local items required by the chosen mission. The current Washington tourist checklist does not list medical travel insurance as a standard document for U.S. citizens. U.S. passport holders are not eligible for the unified e-visa.

The core Russian tourist visa documents for U.S. citizens

The visa file combines applicant documents with the tourist support issued in Russia. The Washington Embassy’s current tourist list includes the passport, printed and signed application, photo and tourist voucher, plus its locally specified payment. The voucher supports the application but is not the visa itself.

Choose Washington, New York or Houston before assembling the final file because each mission publishes its own preliminary review or appointment, payment, submission and passport-return procedure. Use a clear full-size printout and follow only the selected location’s current list.

DocumentWhat to check before submission
PassportValidity and blank pages required by the receiving mission; name and number copied exactly
Visa application formCompleted online, printed and signed; travel dates and purpose match the tourist support
Recent photographCurrent colour photo in the format requested by the receiving mission
Tourist voucherIssued by a registered Russian hotel, travel agency or tour operator; print the complete document
Mission-specific payment and return itemsFollow the current Washington, New York or Houston instructions for payment, appointment, copies and passport return
Insurance checkThe current Washington tourist checklist does not list medical insurance for U.S. citizens; follow the receiving mission’s live list

Passport, application and invitation: the three fields that must match

The Russian visa application is data-sensitive. The passport number, issuing country, full name and requested entry and exit dates must be consistent across your passport, invitation and visa application form. The visa officer does not correct a mismatch at the window; a discrepancy can mean a new invitation or a new appointment.

The invitation is ordered separately and sent by email after payment and any required review. Check it against the passport before completing the application form. If a correction is needed, contact the original issuer before submitting the visa file.

  • Use the passport you will actually submit and travel on; do not order against a second nationality passport.
  • Keep the requested visa dates inside the validity dates printed on the invitation.
  • Print the invitation at full size so its tour-operator registration and verification details remain legible.
  • Use the same trip purpose throughout: a tourist voucher supports tourism, not employment or business activity.

Where U.S. applicants submit and how to plan the file

The active U.S. filing routes are the Embassy in Washington and the Consulates General in New York and Houston. Each publishes its own preliminary review or appointment, payment, submission and passport-return procedure, so follow the chosen location rather than combining instructions from different cities.

Build the schedule from the receiving mission’s current processing guidance and add time for any document review, appointment, mailing and passport return. The invitation provider does not control the visa stage.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do US citizens need for a Russian tourist visa?

Prepare the passport, completed and signed application, recent photo, tourist support and any local items required by the receiving mission. Check that mission’s current document list rather than assuming another country’s insurance or payment rules apply.

Do I need an original invitation by post?

No for a standard tourist invitation. The confirmation and voucher are issued electronically and normally submitted as a clear full-size printout.

Does the invitation guarantee a visa?

No. It is a required supporting document, while the decision to issue a visa remains with the Russian consular authority.

Can I submit documents with different travel dates?

No. Your requested visa dates must fall within the dates on the invitation. Correct the invitation before submission if your plans changed.

Do I need a bank statement?

Do not assume one is required or not required based on another country’s experience. Follow the current checklist of the mission or visa centre where you submit, and bring only documents it requests.

Can I apply before booking flights?

You can usually arrange the invitation once you have a realistic date window. Avoid non-refundable travel until you understand the receiving mission’s current submission and processing timetable.
