What the e-visa gives an Indian traveller
The unified e-visa is valid for 120 days from issue, permits one entry and allows a stay of up to 30 days. The MFA accepts applications between 86 and 4 days before the planned entry date and states that processing takes no more than four calendar days. The online route does not require an invitation or a visit to a mission.
For a straightforward two- or three-week holiday, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, or a single trip to visit family, the e-visa is the simpler instrument, and we say so plainly even though we sell invitations. There is no reason to buy an invitation you do not need.

When the e-visa is not enough
The e-visa does not fit a stay longer than 30 days, more than one entry, entry through a checkpoint outside the approved list or a purpose outside the scheme. The MFA includes tourism, guest and qualifying business visits among permitted purposes, but work and study use different visa categories.
If an itinerary enters Russia, leaves for Kazakhstan or Mongolia and then returns, the single-entry e-visa cannot cover the second entry. The traveller must select the regular visa category and supporting documents that match the actual purpose.

Compare eligibility before comparing price
The e-visa avoids a tourist invitation and in-person mission visit, but only when every trip detail fits the official rules. Check the current state fee on the MFA portal and the current invitation and consular charges separately; static fee comparisons can become outdated.
Duration, entry count, checkpoint and purpose determine whether the e-visa is usable. If any of these falls outside the scheme, plan the appropriate regular visa route from the outset rather than choosing on price alone.
How to decide in two minutes
Answer four questions about your actual itinerary rather than your preferred cost. Will you stay 30 days or less? Will you enter Russia exactly once? Will you arrive through an approved checkpoint, which in practice means a major international airport? Is your purpose tourism, a guest visit or a short business trip within the e-visa's scope? If every answer is yes, apply for the e-visa and skip the invitation entirely.
If any answer is no, identify the correct regular visa category and follow the responsible mission’s document list. A regular tourist-visa application uses a tourist invitation, while work, study, business or private routes may require different support.
