What the document actually is

What Indian applicants call the invitation letter is formally two documents printed on one sheet. The Confirmation (Podtverzhdenie) states that a registered Russian tour operator has accepted you as an inbound tourist. The Tourist Voucher (Vaucher) records the services treated as paid, typically accommodation. Both are required for a tourist visa: a voucher alone is not sufficient, and neither is a confirmation alone.

The issuing operator must appear in Russia's Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators. The register entry is the PTO number printed on the document, which is what a consular officer checks first. Field by field: what each line means

The Indian name problem, and how to get it right

This is the single most important section for Indian applicants. Indian passports are not uniform in how they render names, and the invitation must mirror the passport rather than social usage. Three patterns cause almost all of the trouble.

First, initials. Many passports issued in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka carry a name in the form R. Kumar or S. Venkatesan, where the initial stands for a father's name or a village name. Enter the initial exactly as printed, including the letter and nothing more. Second, the missing surname. Some Indian passports leave the surname field blank and carry the entire name in the given-names field. Third, order and spacing. If the passport shows GURPREET SINGH as given names with no surname, that is what goes on the invitation, in that order. What the Indian missions actually check

That the issuing operator exists in the federal register and its PTO number is valid, because invitations from unregistered sellers are rejected outright. That your personal data matches your passport. And that the dates and multiplicity on the invitation cover what you requested in the application form.
